Club Captain’s Newsletter | October 2023

Welcome to all new members and Petanque players into the club, joining alongside bowlers and the RSA.

If you want anything included in future newsletters (particularly the RSA or Petanque) please let me know on 027 292 2715 or email me at stanmargaret11@gmail.com.

A long overdue congratulations from us all to Simone Stewart on winning the Bay of Plenty Women’s Junior Singles and coming Runner Up in the Bay of Plenty Triples. I am sure there are many more wins coming for this young lady.

The first bowling championship competition has been completed. Congratulations to the Women Vet Pairs winners, Annie Judge and Muriel Lyttle and to the Men’s Vet Pair winners Rusty Petterson and Joe Rowan.

 Bowlers please take note:

  • A new rule has come in this year. Rule 26.3 which states that there must be NO FURTHER PLAY in a knockout competition if at any point it becomes impossible for a player, team or side to win the game given the number of ends left.
  • Please DO NOT sit on the bank of the ditch during games. This is the holding surface when the jack is put into the ditch during a game; sitting on the bank flattens the surface and can cause underlying damage. You could be obscuring a line for another player and it is UNSAFE if a bowler drives from the other end without warning!

Good seating has and is being purchased, so please use this instead of sitting “in the ditch”.

Thanks for your cooperation.

We need volunteers for Twilight bowls please.

This year we have a full field of 32 teams, so will need all the help we can get. The first day is Monday 6th November, then Tuesdays 14th, 21st and 28th November.

You would be helping to set up and/ or pack up the greens, outside bar, in the bar, BBQ, prize tables etc. Start time is around 4pm as the teams begin arriving at about 4.30pm. Please let Dave Jones know ASAP if you will be available on 021 966 795 or email him at davidcaryljones@xtra.co.nz. You can also let myself, Jim or Di know and we will pass your name and availability on to Dave.

It seems that most people are already entered in the Ryman Classic on 28th and 29th of October. If you haven’t entered there is still time.

We are going to start Thirsty Thursday on the 19th of October, running for about six weeks. When you come in for Clubs Night or after a game of bowls, place and pay for an order by 5:30pm AT THE LATEST.

We will start with pizza and then alternate (most probably) with fish and chips. The more the merrier!

Bowlers in particular – remember that we all joined this club to play bowls, meet people and have fun – so come along with that spirit in mind, smile and treat each other with respect always.

Remember that if you need anything, I’m here to help – just let me know.
